MM seeks dynamic and visionary candidates for the role of Chief Grocer (CG). Candidates will ideally bring significant experience in management, operations, sales, and marketing. The CG will have a track record of team management, generating effective sales plans, and creating engaging advertisements. Reporting directly to the Head of Operations, the CG will oversee the success of MM’s grocery staff including the Head Grocer and Grocery Assistant, and will serve as a leader in the MM community. A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills. Candidates should also possess a deep understanding and passion for food and grocery products, a knack for optimal storytelling, as well as a deep understanding of sales and marketing.

The CG responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Store Operations and Management

  • Oversee and manager the Chief Grocer and Grocery Assistant execute logistics, including procurement, shelving, expiration, and delivery.
  • Supervise and approve the Health and Food Safety training and due diligence process.

  • Procure new brands and categories to the market by leading the sales and marketing teams in product launches.

  • Report maintenance issues and manage with the operations and facilities teams.

Sales Experience

  • Work with the Board to develop weekly/monthly/annual and seasonal sales targets for MM Grocery, examine growth opportunities, enabling sales improvements, and take responsibility for the grocery’s performance against targets.

  • Work with the Head of Operations and Marketing to determine branding, positioning, and pricing strategies.
  • Manage stock control and learn about MM’s SKUs, such as product origin and product value, both of which we relay to our customers.
  • Implement sales strategies that further MM’s agenda, drive enhanced revenue generation for the business, and align to set KPIs.

  • Conduct weekly/monthly/annual reporting on sales performance against budget and reporting on variances.

  • Collaborate with Operations and Marketing teams to optimize success: product/brand adjacency, affinities, display rules, conducting trend analysis and ensuring that these are aligned to support and drive sales and conversion.

Marketing and Communications Skills

  • Work with the Head of Operations and Marketing to implement the marketing calendar regarding trading priorities inclusive of launches, promotions, exclusives, and campaign activities to maximize sales opportunities.

  • Develop exceptional storytelling skills that are important in enabling effective communication between interactions with consumers and external partners.

Analytics and Research

  • Monitor and observe the brand and make forecasts, identifying new trends ahead of the curve, hence, offering the business a competitive advantage and keeping it ahead of its competition in the market.

  • Research data-driven insights and couple analysis with standard planning.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of the business’ product as well as standard strategic, analytical, and marketing concepts.

The CG will manage MM’s grocery from staff and scheduling, shelving guidelines, and expiration dates to ensuring a functioning grocery that is hitting its sales targets and grows monthly by product expansion, sales, and innovative offerings to customers. The CG sets the strategic vision for the grocery, is aligned with the Board, and has a strong commitment to MM’s mission.


The CG will be willing to work long hours that may exceed a 45-hour contract to achieve sales targets, lead their team, and run a successful grocery. As the leader of the grocery, the CG will amplify MM’s impact and anticipate trends. The candidate must possess skills to work with and manage a diverse team and be community-oriented. The CG will work cooperatively with MM’s Head of Operations and MM’s Board, as well as be a mentor to the grocery team and own the team’s responsibilities. Candidates should have the ability to move and inspire a large group in a unified direction and vision.

Strategic Visionary

The CG will identify key opportunities for growth and develop tactics to seize those opportunities driving sales and margin growth. Candidates will need to execute new strategies for inclusive and sustainable grocery stores that meet MM’s standards. A successful candidate will be an approachable individual who can form strong and long-lasting relationships, both internally and externally, on behalf of the business with the ability to set and prioritize goals.

Operational Oversight

The CG will oversee grocery staff and establish relationships across teams. The CG is responsible for every component of the grocery store process and must ensure the store is running smoothly, from scheduling to a high-level vision or hiring and growing their team. An understanding of sustainable food systems and the UN Sustainable Development goals will be highly useful for this position. Candidates will have experience running successful sales and marketing campaigns with solid knowledge of web analytics, Google Adwords, and experience with CRM software.

Additionally, a Bachelor’s degree in business, sales, marketing is preferred, but work experience will take primary consideration. 5 years of working experience in-store operations, including from shelving to managerial experience within a fast-paced business environment is desired.
